SUSPENDED FIELD spacer 2000
spacer

The competition proposal for an urban parking lot intervention in Cincinnati, Ohio, deploys a flexible and resilient overhead surface capable of withstanding contact with automobiles without incident. Transforming the parking lot into spatially defined environment, the suspended field is composed of standard orange height markers commonly used at entries to low level parking structures.

While autos navigate the open spaces defined by its sections, pedestrians are able to walk freely throughout the plotted points with ease. At the ends of parking stalls, markers hang two feet from the pavement to function as hanging curbs to aid in parking. From outside the lot, parked autos appear masked and coated by a thick, form-fitting surface, which visually dissipates upon entry.

Due to shifting parallax views, as one drives or walks through the space a changing pattern of points continues to emerge, creating subtle changes that respond uniquely to the position of each occupant.
