Prototype designed in collaboration with Anna Rainer; in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The Undercover Table is generated from the idiom "run, duck, and cover" beneath a table during an earthquake disaster. The table rests compact during everyday use, yet is designed to spring into action when necessary. Providing a safe haven amidst unpredictable chaos, the tanks within the Undercover Table contain comfort and emergency items. Clearly visible from above through the translucent polycarbonate top, the reflective tanks are wrapped in protective bands to be easily spotted during disaster use. These perforated bands disengage to form cushions for reclining and sleeping. The tabletop pulls off to become a stretcher with handholds. Resourcefulness is often key to existence during extreme situations, necessitating one to uncover new functions for the world of things that surround us. The Undercover Table taps into this spirit of invention. |
